The United Nations and Human Rights

The United Nations is guided by the United Nations Charter.  Article 1(3) of the Charter proclaims as one goal "encouraging respect for human rights . . . ."  The International Bill of Human Rights contains the human rights provisions of the Charter, contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  It also contains the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Optional Protocol to the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
