Freedom Federation Organizations Affirm Sanctity of Human Life and Oppose Health Care that Funds Abortion or Treats Life as a Cost-Benefit Commodity

Washington, DC – Today a federation of some of the largest faith-based organizations in the country affirmed their commitment to the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. The diverse organizations are united in their opposition to health care policies that either fund abortion or ration care based on treating life as a mere cost-benefit commodity.

In January 2009, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, President Obama’s health care adviser, wrote in the Lancet medical journal that he supports a “complete lives” system of health care. He wrote that the so-called “complete lives” approach “supports modifying the youngest-first principle by prioritizing adolescents and young adults over infants. Adolescents have received substantial education and parental care, investments that will be wasted without a complete life. Infants by contrast, have not yet received these investments. Similarly, adolescence brings with it a developed personality capable of forming and valuing long-term plans whose fulfillment requires a complete life.” In a Hastings Center Report in 1996, Emanuel spoke of denying care to the disabled “who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens.” He added: “An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia.”

Fearing that House Bill 3200 would fund abortion, members of Congress proposed amendments to ban funding abortion. Those amendments were voted down. House Bill 3200 and other proposals appear to also incorporate a cost-benefit analysis for the aged or ill.

“Life is precious because men and women of every age, race or ethnicity have intrinsic value, having been created in the image of God,” said Mathew Staver, one of the spokespersons for the Freedom Federation. “It is immoral to fund the destruction of innocent human life or to withhold medical treatment from the aged or ill. We must care for our neighbors and those most vulnerable among us. All human life is valuable and deserves dignity and respect.”

The Freedom Federation is a federation of many national, multiethnic and transgenerational organizations and leaders working together on common interests to plan, strategize, coordinate, message and mobilize their various constituents to advance their shared core values.
