Washington, DC - Today, the Freedom Federation and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference hosted a telephone conference on Israel and the conflict with Hamas. Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, spoke briefly to participants. The Freedom Federation consists of national leaders representing nearly 40 million multiracial, multiethnic, and multigenerational constituents. The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) is the nation’s largest Hispanic Christian organization representing 40,800 evangelical churches. 

Operation Pillar of Defense was preceded by months of rocket fire from Gaza by the terrorist group, Hamas, into the southern border towns of Israel. More than 13,000 rockets and mortars have been shot into Israel since 2005, and last week more than 1,050 missiles were launched by Hamas at Israeli civilian sites. Israelis could not be more than 15 seconds away from a bomb shelter.  “Life had become intolerable,” Ambassador Oren said.

The first stage of Operation Pillar of Defense eliminated the military head of Hamas, a well-known terrorist leader, and the group’s long range military capabilities. Subsequent stages of Operation Pillar of Defense have focused on mid-range rockets, command centers, weapon firing pits, weapons manufacturing facilities, and underground tunnels used for smuggling rockets into Gaza. Israel drops leaflets and places tens of thousands of cell calls warning people of targeted attacks. 

Ambassador Oren said that the Iron Dome missile defense has been very successful in bringing down missiles fired from Gaza at heavily populated cities, taking out over 400 rockets aimed at city centers. Ambassador Oren said, “The Iron Dome is a great blessing.”He thanked America for its support of Israel.

“Israel has a right to defend itself. No nation would tolerate terrorists firing missiles at civilian city centers. Hamas is committing war crimes by intentionally targeting civilian populations. This terrorist group is being supplied by Iran to destroy Israel and the Jewish people. We pray for peace and we stand with Israel,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. Mr. Staver is Chair of the Freedom Federation, board member of the NHCLC and its Chief Legal Counsel.
