Mail-Order Abortion Drugs Should Not Be Beyond the Reach of the Law

Dear Member of Congress,

The growing practice of distributing abortion drugs through the mail raises serious questions about women's safety, informed consent, and accountability.

Mifepristone and misoprostol are powerful drugs intended to end a pregnancy and can involve serious complications, including heavy bleeding, incomplete abortion, infection, sepsis, and undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy. When these drugs are obtained through the mail with little or no direct medical oversight, it becomes more difficult to promptly identify complications and ensure that women receive appropriate follow-up care.

There is another danger that receives far too little attention: coercion and abuse.

Across the United States, criminal cases have documented men allegedly or admittedly obtaining abortion-inducing drugs and secretly administering them to pregnant women. In cases from Florida, Virginia, Kansas, Texas, Massachusetts, Ohio, and elsewhere, women have reported being deceived, drugged, or pressured into abortions they did not choose. Some perpetrators have been convicted and sentenced to prison.

Abortion by mail makes this abuse easier. Pills can be ordered remotely, shipped directly to a home, and obtained by someone other than the pregnant woman. A boyfriend, husband, abusive partner, or family member may have access to the drugs without meaningful safeguards to verify who is receiving them or whether the pregnant woman freely consented.

This is not simply an abortion debate. It is a question of whether powerful drugs capable of ending a pregnancy should be distributed through a system vulnerable to coercion, fraud, and criminal misuse.

No woman should discover that someone secretly obtained abortion drugs and used them to poison her and kill her unborn child.

Congress and state legislatures should prohibit the mail-order distribution of abortion drugs and require meaningful, in-person medical safeguards. Women's lives, health, freedom, and informed consent deserve stronger protection than an anonymous package arriving in the mail.
