The People of Iowa Will Not Let Activist Judges Redefine Marriage

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled today that the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman violates the Iowa Constitution. In the case Varnum v. Brien, the court has unanimously agreed to allow same-sex marriage. It is now left to the people to vote on a constitutional amendment to overturn this ruling.

Liberty Counsel filed an amicus brief in this case to preserve marriage in Iowa, which has always been limited to the union between one man and one woman. Marriage laws regulate a social institution upon which society has been built and the future of society rests. Laws may properly restrict marriage of same-sex couples just as the law may forbid incestuous or polygamous marriages.
