Historic Virginia School Forced to Stop Discriminating Against "Good News Clubs"

Sep 18, 2008

After a federal court ruled in favor of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia (CEF), against a school district in Williamsburg, the district was forced to end its discrimination against CEF's Good News Clubs.

In a settlement approved by the federal court this week, the district will rewrite its policy and pay more than $20,000 in damages. We told school officials before we filed the lawsuit that their policy was unconstitutional. They refused, so we filed suit and they learned the hard way that the First Amendment forbids religious discrimination.

We are grateful to the Lord for another victory. This victory opens the door for additional Good News Clubs in the local public schools.

After-school Good News Clubs teach children respect, good citizenship, moral values and character development from a biblical perspective. Every school in America needs a Good News Club. Churches are helping sponsor and provide teachers for these clubs in many cities, but more teachers and volunteers are needed. Contact Liberty Counsel for information about starting a Good News Club in your area.
