Wachovia Bank Bans Christmas Tree Displays From Its Branches

Dec 3, 2010

Wachovia Bank has adopted a policy this year banning all Christmas trees from the décor in their local office branches this Christmas. Wachovia’s policy has offended many customers who have accounts with the bank. One woman has already canceled her account and many others are threatening to follow suit.

Wachovia’s corporate office told Fox News in Orlando, “At Wachovia, we respect the diversity of our customers and team members [sic] therefore we are decorating our stores with poinsettia plants so that everyone can be included.” That decision is ironic considering the symbolism of the poinsettia, which is known as the Christmas flower. One version of folklore says  that these flowers were a poor girl’s gift to the Christ child at a nativity display in Mexico, and, when presented, the plant miraculously turned bright red.

Liberty Counsel is continuing its eighth annual “Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign,” pledging to be a “Friend” to those who recognize Christmas and a “Foe” to those who censor Christmas.   Liberty Counsel has added the Wachovia Bank to the naughty side of its “Naughty and Nice” list, which catalogs companies that either censor (“naughty”) or recognize (“nice”) Christmas. Customer voices have a big impact on corporate action.
