Liberty Counsel has sent a letter offering pro bono representation and advice to Cherokee County School District officials who are facing the threat of a lawsuit from Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) for holding high school graduation ceremonies in a local church.
The school district has held graduation at a local 5,000-seat church for years. The church only charges $2,000, while other secular venues cost up to $40,000. Several metro Atlanta school boards use similar church settings, as many schools across America have done for decades.
This type of misinformation campaign is typical of AU and similar groups who use scare tactics to intimidate. If public school officials decide that a church provides the best graduation venue, that selection does not violate the Constitution.
