Following a demand letter sent by Liberty Counsel, companies that operate government-assisted apartment complexes for seniors in Troy, Pennsylvania reversed a policy that prohibited religious-themed Christmas decorations.
Residents had always been permitted to decorate common areas and doors for various holidays without restrictions. However, this year the building owner and manager informed the residents that Christmas decorations could not contain any Christian elements. Two residents were told to take down decorations they had already displayed.
Liberty Counsel sent a demand letter to the management on behalf of a resident demanding that the decision be reversed and that residents be permitted to decorate without facing religious discrimination. Soon after, the company decided to go back to its prior practice of allowing residents to decorate doors and common areas without restrictions.
We learned that the management company started prohibiting religious Christmas decorations because of misinformation obtained by the a company known as the Vendome Group.
This situation is only one of many that arise because misinformation is spread by organizations that give incorrect legal opinions. Liberty Counsel is sending a demand letter to the Vendome Group explaining the rights seniors have to decorate for Christmas. Groups or individuals who attempt to interfere with religious expression of the residents are in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
