The city of Boston has allowed 284 flags to be displayed on a city flagpole. Just one flag has been banned — the Christian flag! Not just once but twice! It’s outrageous bigotry. It targets Christians. And we’re in court to stop it.
This Wednesday, Liberty Counsel will be in "Beantown" to ask a federal judge to rule that a Boston resident can fly the Christian flag on a city flagpole.
Your generosity now is crucial. Stand with Liberty Counsel to defend freedom in Boston—the "cradle of liberty"—where it's under direct assault. See below for details and help us defend freedom now. Thank you! —Mat
Right now, the city of Boston is openly discriminating against Christians and a Christian viewpoint.
And they seem to be proud of it!
The city has been so bold in its anti-faith stance that officials have TWICE rejected a request to display the Christian flag. In an email to our client, they even openly touted their secret and totally unconstitutional policy of anti-Christian bigotry that officials used to ban the flag.
So, how could this happen in "the cradle of liberty"?
There is just one answer: WE’RE FACING BLATANT ANTI-CHRISTIAN BIGOTRY.
Since 2005, the city of Boston has permitted outside civic and cultural groups to fly their flags on a city flagpole. In all, some 284 different flags have been flown more than 300 times on city grounds, including:
In all, hundreds of flags have flown at the city hall. Just ONE FLAG has been banned: the Christian flag.
+ + How Boston banned the Christian flag . . .
This all started when our client, Hal Shurtleff, requested that his Christian civic organization, Camp Constitution, be allowed to fly the Christian flag on Constitution Day. The event would have lasted just a few hours at the most, even though the city has allowed other flags to fly for several days at a time.
Boston officials said "no." And then, officials said "no" to a second request. That’s when Liberty Counsel's legal team got involved.
In a deposition, a city official admitted he denied the flag because the application referred to it as a "Christian" flag, even though the word "Christian" does not appear on the flag. In fact, the only symbol on the Christian flag is a red cross, which appears in a smaller proportion when compared with the Islamic crest that dominates the permitted Turkish flag.
The city's discrimination against Camp Constitution’s Christian viewpoint amounts to unconstitutional censorship. Censoring religious viewpoints in a public forum where secular viewpoints are permitted violates the First Amendment.
That's why I'm committing all the necessary legal resources of Liberty Counsel to this fight. I will not allow a Christian citizen to be bullied and censored by government officials!
+ + This will be a costly and arduous battle...
Liberty Counsel attorneys have filed extensive legal documents and have requested that the court make a final ruling. But this is the same court that ruled against us before being reversed by the Court of Appeals.
Our legal team must brace for the very likely outcome that we will have to appeal once again if the lower court rules against us. I am committed to fighting this case for our client and for every Christian who faces bigotry and viewpoint discrimination from government officials. We will not stop until we prevail!
This case in Boston is just one of many intense cases in which we are fighting anti-faith activists.
Liberty Counsel is on the cutting edge of this issue with current battles against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Planned Parenthood and others who are taking specific actions to censor and punish Christian and pro-life citizens.
These cases are creating a strain on our legal resources.
Will you join with Liberty Counsel now to push back against this blatant act of anti-Christian bigotry while we continue other crucial efforts? Please make your best possible tax-deductible gift now.
By giving now, you'll help us PUSH BACK against a rising tide of anti-Christian bigotry. And thanks in advance for your prayers and your faithful partnership.
For faith and liberty,
