Merriam-Webster just announced its 2019 "Word of the Year." It's a bizarre disgrace. America's venerable dictionary publisher is bowing deeply to radical LGBT forces . . . and pushing the LGBT agenda forward. See below.

This latest cultural atrocity gives you and me a disturbing signal of how far our nation has shifted off its Judeo-Christian foundation—and why Liberty Counsel is so needed today.

Merriam-Webster fell in, lockstep, with the garish LGBT parade today when it announced its 2019 Word of the Year: "They."

They, you see, is the new pronoun of choice for people whose "gender identity is nonbinary," as America's word authority announced this morning.

"Nonbinary" is the headache-inducing term for someone who insists that he or she "is neither entirely male nor entirely female," as Merriam-Webster puts it.

But the fact is, we're either male or female. It's in our DNA, with more than 6500 unique differences between male and female DNA.

+  +  Fighting "transgender tyrants"

As strange as this all is, it's a fierce battle Liberty Counsel has been fighting for many years, with a marked escalation in 2019.

We intervened, for example, in Madison, Wisconsin, after school authorities orchestrated the coming out, on video, of teacher Mark Vincent Busenbark. He gave K-5th grade students the jaw-dropping news that he was now "transgender" and was henceforth to be known as "Vica Steel."

Dressed as a woman, Busenbark instructed students that, "...for my pronouns, you can call me 'they,' 'them,' and 'their.'"

And thanks to you, we defended "John Doe," an Ohio sixth-grader who got sent to the principal's office for calling a boy a boy—and using the forbidden pronoun, "he."

"You can have your own beliefs, but [Boy A who says he's a girl] wants to be called a girl," the assistant principal told John.

And then, as punishment, she publicly shamed and embarrassed John by yanking him out of PE and taking him back to the principal's office.

All because he told the truth — respectfully — about his friend, a biological male.

• The First Amendment protects a student's right to hold his own views and to respectfully share them.

• The government may not take one side in a cultural or scientific debate and turn classrooms into enclaves of totalitarianism.

• Schools must remain neutral regarding hot-button issues and may not establish an "orthodoxy" regarding transgenderism.

In response, the school district reversed course. It said John's record "does not contain any record of disciplinary action." And the district confirmed that "no student would be required to use" false pronouns.
