Flood of New Clients As Pastors Face Unlawful Restrictions

Apr 22, 2020

"...on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18

Pastors in over 30 states have contacted Liberty Counsel for guidance and representation as pastors nationwide have been illegally and unconstitutionally arrested for serving their flocks.  I'd like to tell you about just a few of the churches we are officially representing as counsel of record, in the fight for religious freedom.  Because, like the other clients we are serving in this area, these churches are providing services to their flock that cannot be replaced with a simple online podcast.  Remember, these are just three of our clients in this matter...

The River Church of Tampa, Florida, has a fully self-sustainable aquaponic garden and fish farm that allows them to provide food to over 900 severely impoverished people in some of the most crime-ridden areas of their city. The church became a Liberty Counsel client when its pastor was wrongly arrested after the Sheriff approved the service.

The church food programs are accomplished without any type of taxpayer-funded local, state or federal aid, but out of the goodness of the members' hearts. In fact, the church has regularly refused any governmental assistance so as not to invite governmental restrictions or control into their ministry. Without the food provided by this church, many families go hungry.

In addition to the much-needed foodstuffs, recipients are encouraged to join in the work of running the massive aquaponics operation, thus providing volunteers with jobs skills and training in the highly sought-after sustainable agriculture industry. The River Church thereby provides not just food for empty stomachs, but also skills designed to lift families out of poverty even as this church lifts souls out of depravation.

The people served by The River Church cannot be served through just online services...and their Pastor, Rodney Howard-Browne was arrested for serving his flock.

Another of our many new church clients, Lighthouse Fellowship in Virginia, has a ministry focused on recovery from addiction and sex trafficking and abuse. National statistics, as well as overwhelming documented personal testimony of recovered people, clearly indicate that recovery programs work best when they are performed in-person within a community of people living through the same trials.

Statistics also show that recovered persons are most likely to backslide in their recovery during times of emotional and/or economic stress, making in- person group therapy even more important. Without in-person support and fellowship, many recovered persons get sucked back into the destructive practices that nearly cost them their lives.

These people served by Lighthouse Fellowship cannot be adequately served in a podcast...and the Pastor here has been served with a summons and faces 1 year in jail along with steep fines for having 16 people in a 293-seat sanctuary.

These are just a few of the stories we are hearing from the pastors in over 30 states that are calling our offices for help.

The churches of our nation are under siege by tyrants apparently set on silencing and shuttering our churches during the very time when churches are needed the most.

The pastors leading these churches are not ignorant of the risks of the COVID virus.

And in each of these cases, the pastors went above-and-beyond government recommendations to protect attendees from contagion, including sanitizing their entire churches top to bottom, distributing hand sanitizer, and in The River's case, installing over $100,000 worth of hospital-grade microfilter air cleaners rated to destroy microbes.

In short, the pastors took every possible precaution they could think of to protect their flock so that their flock's physical and spiritual needs could be met.

In the case of Maryville Baptist Church, the pastor held "drive in church," in which congregants drove to the church parking lot, spaced their cars at a safe distance from each other and listened to the pastor's sermon over loudspeakers.

Yet every single attendee and even members of the press who were sent to cover the story, as well as the pastor himself, were all put on a 14-day quarantine, with each entire household unable to leave their house for any reason, at any time. At least one of the attendees has already lost their job due to what essentially boils down to unconstitutional house arrest.

Walmart and Home Depot are open in each of the areas where we are representing pastors and churches. Grocers and liquor stores are open in these areas. None of these commercial entities took nearly the level of sanitation and safety precautions taken by our clients. Even abortion clinics are open in most of these areas.

Yet, not one car in a Walmart, Home Depot, liquor store or abortion clinic lot has been ticketed. Not one shopper has been arrested. And not one person attending any of these commercial entities or "clinics" has been put on quarantine – which amounts to a 14-day house arrest – for the simple act of visiting these places.

United States Attorney General William Barr's official directive from the US Department of Justice clearly states that churches MUST NOT be treated differently than any commercial business.

Yet the tyrannical, anti-Christian persecution of churches and pastors continues across our land.

Without the very necessary services these churches provide, many more lives would be lost – not to the elusive coronavirus, but to poverty, hunger, addiction and despair.

We are standing with these churches and defending each client free of charge because it is their constitutional RIGHT to hold church without government interference and because it is their calling from God.

As I mentioned above, pastors from over 30 states have called Liberty Counsel for help at this point.  Please help us help THEM - select here

Finally, let me leave you with this Word of hope and encouragement during these trying times: "Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Galatians 6:9
