Stark Warning from Romanian American Pastor

May 11, 2020

"I immigrated in 1987 from a country where the government could close down and even demolish churches at will! But in the end [the government] lost, because a few pastors stood up to the tyranny and people followed." - Pastor Christian Ionescu, Elim Romanian Pentacostal Church, a Liberty Counsel client.

Last week, Liberty Counsel filed suit on behalf of two Chicago churches that serve the Romanian community and are led by Romanian-born pastors who suffered greatly in their former homeland for preaching the Word of God.

Perhaps more than any other factor, CHURCHES broke the tyranny of former Soviet Bloc countries like Romania and restored freedom to the people. Churches, Bibles and the Word of God were targeted across the Soviet empire. Pastors and believers alike were persecuted, jailed, and even beaten and killed for proclaiming the Good News of Christ to a people oppressed by a government dedicated to tracing, surveilling and controlling the people.

Yet, pastors with the courage to stand for Christ against all possible governmental threats to their lives rescued an entire geographical region from tyranny. Pope John Paul worked to bring freedom to Poland. Our client, Pastor Ionescu and others, stood firm and Romania is now free.

Now it is time to bring freedom back to America. Our churches MUST be freed from government edicts dictating their form and manner of worship. You can stand NOW! - Select here to help!

Last week, Liberty Counsel filed a federal lawsuit against IL Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who is ordering all churches to remain closed or be limited to just 10 people – no matter the facility size – and says it will take 12 – 18 months…or until a vaccine is in place to reopen.

This 12-18-month order parallels a bill just filed in the U.S. House of Representatives by Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush. House Bill 6666, (yes, that is really the bill number!), filed May 1, 2020, requests $100 billion to implement testing, tracing and contact of everyone.

Some government officials have attempted to exercise authority that neither God nor the First Amendment allow.

This past Sunday, Elim church opened for the first time in many weeks. Pastor Ionescu said that even though churches can follow the same rules as "essential" services, "yet we cannot have more than 10 people, which is ridiculous."

On Saturday, the church brought in a professional disinfectant crew to sanitize the sanctuary. Then the staff placed yellow tape around the chairs so that people were more than six feet apart. The attendees wore masks and used hand sanitizer. And the church turned away people when the seats were filled – which was about 10 to 15 percent of capacity.

No other commercial business goes to this extent to keep people safe. Yet, Gov. Pritzker wants churches to stay closed. This is unconstitutional.

Our legal team worked on this and other cases over the weekend through last evening. We expect a ruling from the court this week.

To give you an idea of the long hours required to stay on top of these developments, some of our team worked until 4:00 to 5:00 AM Thursday through Sunday. Despite this, we are dedicated to winning this critical battle. This is the battle for the church to keep it free!

In our Kentucky case for Maryville Baptist Church, Friday night we received an injunction from the lower court against Kentucky Gov. Beshear and then Saturday afternoon we received another injunction from the Court of Appeals in the same case. Both decisions agreed that the ban on in-person services is unconstitutional.

Gov. Beshear defied the Constitution, his own Attorney General, and even the U.S. Department of Justice. Praise God, the courts agreed with Liberty Counsel and issued the two injunctions which stopped Beshear from implementing his order. Churches in Kentucky are now free to worship!

But our fight continues in each of about 40 states where we are defending pastors and churches from illegal, unconstitutional orders decreed by tyrannical state and local officials. And we are still fighting for justice in Virginia, Maine, and Illinois where we have filed similar federal lawsuits to protect America’s religious freedom.

Our attorneys and staff are working around the clock at Liberty Counsel. The cries for help and freedom from America’s pastors and churches are growing louder every day, even as the tyrannical actions of many overreaching state and local leaders grow more draconian.

We cannot allow churches to be forced underground like the Romanian churches were. We need to stop the tyranny NOW, before it takes root so strongly that 44 years pass before we see a return to freedom, as in Romania where our client Pastor Ionescu and his fellow clergy suffered so much to keep the Word of God alive.

Finally, please be in prayer for our country and for Liberty Counsel’s staff as we continue to keep religious freedom FREE in America.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." Philippians 4:6
