Satan's Open War on Churches

May 27, 2020

Thousands of pastors and church members nationwide face jail or worse if they re-open on Pentecost Sunday.

As we approach Pentecost Sunday, the traditional birth date of Christ's church, one thing is clear – Satan has declared open war on America's churches.

Over the past several months, governors and local officials have taken it upon themselves to deny Americans their First Amendment right to religious freedom, demanding church closures and citing pastors who refuse to comply.

As of this writing:

  • Four pastors we represent have been served criminal complaints and three face potential jail time for having opened their churches...
  • One entire congregation we represent in Kentucky was put under the equivalent of 14-day house arrest through arbitrary forced quarantine orders, causing several members to lose their jobs even though not one attendee had been tested, let alone tested positive, for COVID-19...
  • A church that we do not represent in Holly Springs, MS, was firebombed just days ago. The explosion leveled most of the building and the words "Bet you stay home now you hypokrits [sic]" were spray-painted across the parking lot...
  • And the City of Chicago has threatened our Romanian church clients with "Summary Abatement" – a process through which the City could bulldoze the church building should pastors or members continue meeting in-person on church property.

Liberty Counsel has stood in the gap for churches by defending their persecuted pastors, filing federal lawsuits in several states and providing legal counsel to thousands of churches shocked by the oppression of their religious freedom. Because we have been deluged by calls for help, we also developed www.ReOpenChurch.org, which provides legal guidelines and recommendations for churches seeking to follow God's commandments.

As a result of these efforts, over 3,000 California churches and several thousand others nationwide will open their doors on May 31, 2020 – Pentecost Sunday…with or without their governors' permission.

For some of these churches, like our clients Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church and Logos Baptist Ministries, this action is almost as dangerous as holding church under Communist regimes. Gov. Pritzker and the Chicago Mayor have threatened to demolish any church that defies the governor's illegal edict by holding church services.

This is the same sort of persecution the Romanian-born pastors we represent suffered in their Soviet-occupied homeland. They never thought God's faithful would be similarly persecuted here in "the land of the free."

Pentecost is the seventh Sunday after Easter and it marks the birth of the Christian Church when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and followers of Jesus (Acts 2:1-47).

Some 2,000 years after the first Pentecost, America – the country that more than any other has shone Christ's light in the world – will prayerfully see her churches throw off the chains of tyranny and celebrate a rebirth of religious freedom.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will descend upon America in a new and powerful way as people in California and around the country gather in person for the first time in months to praise His Holy Name!

Please also pray for everyone at Liberty Counsel. Our staff and attorneys have been working around the clock defending the pastors and churches whose rights were nearly snuffed out by anti-Christian tyrants. The immense amount of work has stretched both our time and budget. Please pray for strength, continued guidance and the finances necessary to finish this fight for God's churches!

P.S. As you know, Liberty Counsel is counseling, representing and/or defending thousands of pastors and churches nationwide as they try to navigate a myriad of constitutional abuses. We have several federal lawsuits filed on behalf of churches, including filings in Maine, Virginia, Kentucky and Illinois where pastors were arrested for obeying God rather than men.

As always, our legal representation is provided to clients free of charge. Very few could afford to take on the monumental task of suing the government. YOUR donations make our defense of religious freedom possible! Please, select here to give generously to our litigation fund today.
