In God We Trust - A Remarkable Reminder

Sep 16, 2020

Something remarkable happened to me during the Bible Reading Marathon in Washington, DC, this week, and I believe it has a lot to do with our cases defending pastors and churches against illegal edicts by lawless governors and power-mad bureaucrats. Read on to learn more. -Mat

This week began with the annual Bible Reading Marathon in Washington, DC. Usually carried out on the Capitol steps, due to COVID the marathon was held in our Ministry Center across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court. What an honor and pleasure to host such a spiritually significant event!

During the annual marathon, the Bible is read non-stop from Genesis to Revelation. Each reader picks up where the last left off. Due to the large number of readers and their schedules, there is no way to know or plan what passage one might wind up reading.

The passage I read was incredibly relevant to the work Liberty Counsel is doing on behalf of the pastors and churches we are defending around the nation. When I saw where I was to begin reading, I knew the Lord had arranged the details...

As you know, pastors and parishioners are being arrested, criminally charged and fined for worshipping -- in AMERICA! Churches are being threatened with seizure and destruction. Anti-church governors and lawless bureaucrats are trying to silence the Word of God and punish those who refuse to go along with their illegal edicts.

So, it was with some amazement that I saw the portion I was to read – Psalm 56, which is a perfect passage for America’s faithful men and women of God fighting unjust restrictions on their God-given right to praise and worship in an open church.

I commend the entire Psalm to you, but here are portions that I felt were highly evocative of the traps and snares lawless governors have laid for pastors and churches, and the courageous faith with which our clients have responded...

All day long they twist my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil. They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life.

(But) this I know, that God is for me. In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? (emphasis added)

The stories of our clients fighting for the God-given RIGHT to exercise their unalienable, constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion came to mind as I read. And my reading literally became a prayer for them.

As you know, we have filed five federal lawsuits against the worst church restrictors in the nation -- the misguided governors of California, Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia and Maine. This month, we will file a sixth lawsuit.

In California, we represent Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry and 162 affiliate churches against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s outrageous bans on worship, even Bible studies and fellowship in private homes! We recently filed our emergency brief at the Court of Appeals.

In Illinois, we represent Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church and Logos Baptist Ministries against Gov. J.B. Pritzker and his illegal orders enforced by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s threats to seize and destroy church buildings for refusing to obey Pritzker’s illegal orders.

In Kentucky, we represent Maryville Baptist Church against Gov. Andy Beshear, who had every attendee of an Easter Sunday outdoor, stay-in-your-own-car, drive-in church put under the equivalent of 14-day house arrest... for attending church. We just submitted our final brief and will soon present oral arguments at the Court of Appeals.

In Virginia, we represent Lighthouse Fellowship Church of Chincoteague Island against Gov. Ralph Northam and his illegal attempts to shut down churches, criminally charging the pastor and even sending police cars to the church parking lot waiting to arrest or scare away potential attendees.

In Maine, we represent Calvary Chapel of Bangor against Gov. Janet Mills, who demands that churches apply for HER permission to open, and only under HER extremely restrictive conditions and only with HER “Governor Approved Church” badge on the door. We presented oral arguments before a three-judge panel.

We are fighting to re-establish and reaffirm both the rule of law and every American’s constitutional right to religious freedom. And this fight is affecting every church in America, from home churches to chapels to hometown churches to mega auditoriums with extensive outreaches.

For our part, we will not stop until religious freedom in America is once again truly free!

We will fight all the way to the highest court in the land to ensure that religious freedom remains FREE. In fact, last week, we filed a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court regarding our Illinois case on behalf of Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church and Logos Baptist Ministries. This is the first church closure case in the nation to go before the Supreme Court.

In God’s wisdom, we need YOUR help to be successful, and you need to stand with us in defense of our nation’s churches. This is not merely a legal battle – it is a battle for the future of the Church in America, and thus, the world. We are all called to play a role in this struggle as members of the Body of Christ.

Cases like these bring high legal expenses and our five federal lawsuits on behalf of illegally closed and restricted churches are no exception. Thank God for His gracious provision that came through a generous donor who has established a challenge grant that will effectively double the impact of your gift today.
