This Bill Will Ban Life-Saving Counseling

"I probably would have killed myself. I would not have been satisfied with a government-mandated gay identity."

That's what Ken said would have happened to him without Christian counseling at a time when he struggled with unwanted same-sex attractions. He sought help when he thought all hope was gone. Had he been told to change his values and accept that which he did not want for his life, Ken would not be here today.

Since 2012, when California passed the first law banning any counsel for minors seeking to change or overcome their unwanted same-sex attractions, behaviors or gender confusion, I have fought in the courts to keep the government out of the counseling room. We won a huge case in that battle in Florida last year.

But HR 5, the misnamed "Equality Act," will ban this life-saving counsel for everyone if it passes in the Senate. The HR 5 counseling ban applies to ALL AGES AND IS FOR ALL COUNSELORS. It is not limited to licensed counselors. HR 5 will also ban any counsel from pastors or church staff members--ALL COUNSEL will be banned even if you are not licensed.

One of our change counsel clients (whom we will call David), testified under oath about his own struggle:

"When I was 5 years old, I was sexually molested by a 16-year-old high school boy who was also my neighbor. The internalization of this abuse and having no therapist available affected my behavior and resulted in social ostracism. I had traumatic experiences in perceiving and feeling that I was not really a male child. When I reached puberty and for many years after it, I found myself sexually attracted to men because of my earlier abuse.

"For all these years, I carried a feeling of immense and crushing shame for my same-sex attractions.

"During a period of twenty years following puberty, I became clinically depressed twice, dealt with tremendous anxiety, experienced obsessive compulsive disorder and knew in my heart that I was very confused about my sexual orientation and gender identity. In the latter years of this twenty-year period, I found a course of treatment that truly helped me resolve the issues I had been experiencing."

Counseling is a lot like a GPS map system. You tell the counselor where you want to go, and the counselor helps you reach that destination. But the "Equality Act" attempts to ban one viewpoint of counseling--the viewpoint that people do not have to be chained to their unwanted desires, behaviors or confusion. In fact, it will mandate that any counsel be only that which promotes LGBT and Q.

The wins Liberty Counsel has achieved against change counsel bans will be erased. Believe me, I work directly with these counselors and their clients. My heart breaks to think this lifesaving counsel could be banned--for everyone, including pastors and church counselors.

The "Equality Act" strips clients and patients of their RIGHT to seek the counseling they desire. No one, including both licensed and unlicensed counselors, is exempt under this bill. Not even pastors would be allowed to discuss or advise someone who is seeking help to rid themselves of gender confusion and unwanted desires.

The "Equality Act" ensures counselors and pastors cannot act as a GPS to help people reach their objective. If they are silenced, and if this counsel is banned, it is no exaggeration to say that many people will commit suicide.

There is NO ROOM for the federal government in the private counseling rooms. This, like any counseling, is up to the client and the counselor.

This bill demands that people accept unwanted feelings and adopt gender confusion as a lifestyle choice.

Years of study show that 85% of young people who experience gender confusion resolve naturally without any intervention at all. They simply grow out of it. But the dictatorial "Equality Act" seeks to cement gender confusion, and no one--not even the person seeking counsel--can object.

If the "Equality Act" passes, people like David will have no lifesaving choices, and no access to the counseling they so desperately need.
