Like many large urban school districts, Miss Sharon’s district has a problem. Nearly half of high schoolers are not proficient at reading. And 70% of high schoolers are not even at grade level for math proficiency. One-third of children come from “economically disadvantaged” homes. Far more come from broken homes. A significant number of children live below the poverty line and some are homeless. Crime is a constant factor in the area, especially in public high schools.

According to the area police chief, juvenile arrests in the area were up by over 20% last year, with the majority of the arrests in high schools. The high school arrests were primarily for assault, students bringing weapons to school, and selling narcotics on campus.

Needless to say, children and teens in this school system NEED the love of Christ. That’s exactly why Miss Sharon, a longtime teacher at her school, agreed to serve as faculty sponsor for a student-led Bible Club hosted on school grounds.

But a so-called “gay-identified” male teacher at Miss Sharon’s school apparently couldn’t stand the thought of Christlike love and pure living being promoted on school grounds. Mr. Christophe’ saw the very existence of the student Bible club as a personal insult to his "out, loud and proud” lifestyle, so he harassed the Bible club students and tried to get Miss Sharon FIRED — all because he HATES Christians.

The students felt one of the best ways to shine light into the sometimes-dark world of their high school was to create chalk art around campus displaying positive messages for fellow students. The artwork was even preapproved by the school principal.

Mr. Christophe’ took it upon himself to erase and deface the students’ messages. Christophe’ claimed that the student artwork that read, “God Loves You!” was “hate speech” because, he claimed, “God doesn’t love me.” He filed a formal complaint against Miss Sharon claiming she had inspired the students’ messages to target him with “hate speech.”

Notably, when the same high school sponsored a Hindu celebration, including student art and decorations honoring the pagan “god” Radha Krishna, Mr. Christophe’ had no complaints.

Christophe’ began targeting student Bible club members in his classes, making derogatory comments about “your Jesus.” Then he turned his sights on Miss Sharon to have her FIRED from her longtime teaching position.

Christophe’ began filing frivolous and unfounded professional conduct complaints against Miss Sharon in retaliation for her Christian faith and her leadership of the Bible club. After Christophe’ filed the third complaint, Miss Sharon called Liberty Counsel.

Our attorneys intervened and held a meeting with the district’s human resource director. But even after that meeting, Christophe’ kept filing frivolous and libelous complaints against Miss Sharon, seeking to not only get her fired but to permanently damage her reputation as an educator, preventing her from getting other work should she leave the school.

Liberty Counsel intervened again. We made clear that if the district continued to allow Christophe’ to harass the students and Miss Sharon, we would take immediate legal action.

After meeting with Liberty Counsel attorneys a second time, the school wisely decided to close Christophe’s complaints against Miss Sharon as “unsubstantiated.” Miss Sharon’s record is clear, and Christophe’ is now prevented from harassing the Christian teachers and students in his school. As a result, the Bible Club is growing and running strong.
