Urgent 2 days to pray for Kim Davis. . .

Urgent prayer needed! On Thursday I will present oral arguments at the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, in a case set up to harass Kim Davis and to take revenge on the Rowan County clerk who did not want to violate her Christian faith. 

It’s been nearly 10 years since Kim Davis won all Kentucky office holders the right to religious accommodations that protect them from being forced to violate their faith. 

But David Ermold and David Moore are still trying to capitalize on the brief moment of fame they engineered back in 2015. This time they aren’t coming for Kim’s job. Now they want to take everything Kim and her family own.

In 2015, David Ermold and David Moore heard on social media that the Rowan County, KY, clerk Kim Davis was refusing to issue marriage licenses as she awaited the results of her religious accommodation request. 

Ermold and Moore grabbed their phones and rushed to the clerk’s office, hoping to create a spectacle they could post online. Their first video, which showed them harassing the soft-spoken Christian woman in her office, went viral, garnering a flood of views and attention for the men. 

Had the men really wanted to be married, they could have traveled to any one of the seven surrounding counties, all of which were issuing marriage licenses. But had the two Davids done that, their 15 minutes of fame would have been over. 

Instead, the men traveled to Kim’s office four more times, each time recording their increasingly aggressive tactics and posting the videos online, achieving yet more internet “fame” as they ridiculed this quiet woman’s faith.

While Kim was in jail for refusing to violate her religious beliefs, one of her assistant clerks began issuing marriage licenses. Ermold and Moore received their license, posting a video online. But that wasn’t enough for them as they wanted Kim’s signature on their license.

Kim’s battle eventually won religious accommodation rights for all Kentucky officials, granted by a new governor, and later a unanimous legislature, which guaranteed religious freedom for ALL clerks. Ermold and Moore’s online celebrity status began to wane.  

Perhaps that’s why Ermold decided to run for Kim’s job three years later, in 2018. But the good folks of Rowan County, KY, were fed up with Ermold and Moore’s attention-seeking antics and wanted no more of the protests the men had brought to the county. Ermold never even made it out of the primary race against Kim, losing handily to his opponent. 

Upon losing the 2018 election, Ermold told reporters, “At least Kim Davis has the integrity to stand up for what she believes in,” an odd statement indeed from a man who tried to force Kim to violate those beliefs.

Fast-forward to 2023, and the two Davids are again trying to force themselves into the spotlight. This time they aren’t simply out for Kim’s job — she left office five years ago. This time the men want to bankrupt Kim and her family, taking their home and everything Kim owns. 

The continued drama by these two men leads one to wonder if, perhaps, they simply miss the brief fame they achieved while harassing Kim in 2015. Or if they simply hate Kim’s faith so very much that they feel they must punish the Kentucky Christian for the integrity Ermold once praised. 

In 2020, Justice Clarence Thomas commented on Kim’s case, saying, “Since Obergefell ... people of good will [have been continually labeled] as bigots merely for refusing to alter their religious beliefs in the wake of prevailing orthodoxy.” 

That is exactly what David Ermold and David Moore are attempting again, painting themselves as victims in a fight they chose to start in order to “go viral” on social media.  

This case may have long-lasting reverberations. We are planning to take this case to the U.S. Supreme Court to win religious accommodation for ALL government officials nationwide, as well as to overturn the dreadful 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling that instigated this fight.
