Twisted Thinking Targeted Christian Teacher

“God doesn’t love ME.” That was the excuse a male homosexual teacher gave for destroying Christian students’ art works and trying to get a Christian teacher fired over her faith. This is sad, but a hurt person tends to hurt others. In this case, this person is going after a Christian teacher and prevent children from hearing the gospel. 

In a twisted way, this teacher reasoned, since “God doesn’t love ME,” then a fellow Christian teacher who is the sponsor of a Christian student club must be engaged in “hate” speech when the kids are being taught that “God loves you”! Weird, I know, but confused minds have no reasoning ability. 

Over the past year, Liberty Counsel has received a shocking number of legal help requests from Christian teachers under attack for their faith — mostly from the LGBTQ crowd.

In this case, a teacher — we’ll call him Mr. Smith* — went on a rampage. Student members of the school’s after-school Bible club had posted artwork all over the school declaring “God Loves You” to all who could read them.  

The positive messages of love were meant to be a refreshing beam of light in the troubled inner-city school district in which Mr. Smith works.

Mr. Smith did his best to try to destroy as many of the student art projects as he could. Smith then waged a personal vendetta against student members of the club, using his classroom as a bully pulpit to publicly shame these young students for their faith. 

And when that didn’t work to blot out these young people’s faith, Smith took another tack — trying to get the after-school Bible group’s faculty leaders to quit or be fired. 

Smith began publicly harassing the Bible club teachers with even more vigor than he had against the students. One of the faculty leaders was so tired of the harassment that she quit not just leading the after-school Bible group but also teaching at the school altogether.

Mr. Smith upped the ante, trying to get the remaining Bible club teacher FIRED. 

Mr. Smith filed formal “hate speech” complaints against the remaining teacher, Miss Sharon. Smith irrationally claimed that because “God doesn’t love ME,” therefore the message “God loves you” must be hate speech. Mr. Smith continued filing frivolous complaints against Miss Sharon, hoping to get her fired. 

Our attorneys intervened and held a meeting with the district’s human resource director. But even after that meeting, Mr. Smith kept filing frivolous and libelous complaints against Miss Sharon, seeking to not only get her fired but to permanently damage her reputation as an educator, preventing her from getting other work should she leave the school. 

Liberty Counsel intervened again. We made clear that if the district continued to allow Mr. Smith to harass the students and Miss Sharon, we would take immediate legal action. 

The school wisely decided to close Smith’s complaints against Miss Sharon as “unsubstantiated.” Miss Sharon’s record is clear, and Mr. Smith is now prevented from harassing the Christian teachers and students at his school. As a result, the Bible club is growing and running strong.
