This Mistake Should Never Happen

Jul 22, 2025

“This was a mistake. It should never have happened.”

Debbie’s story is heartbreaking.

She endured a traumatic childhood that led to the feeling that she could never be accepted in the world. But at 44, after watching a TV interview with women living as “men,” Debbie began to believe that living as “Lee” could erase her pain.

She underwent many surgeries. She spent 17 years on testosterone, which deepened her voice, built her muscle mass, and caused her to grow a beard.

“I thought I would become a different person,” Debbie said. “I’d become accepted in the world.”

But that fantasy didn’t last.

“I remember breaking down. It was like: ‘This was a mistake. It should never have happened.’”

Debbie needed Christian counseling, not a surgeon’s scalpel.

Now we have a chance to overturn LGBTQ law in the country that bans Christian counseling. We are preparing our brief for the Supreme Court.

Help us KEEP FIGHTING on behalf of individuals like Debbie. Our Challenge Grant will DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT.

Now 61, Debbie is filled with sorrow — and unsure how to reverse the damage.

“What do you do? I’ve got no hair, I’ve got a beard, I’ve had all my body mutilated. ... I think I’d have to wave a magic wand.”

“We were too unwell to consent.”

Charlie’s story began at 15.

Like so many young women today, she was struggling with depression and disordered eating — and believed the cultural lie that changing her gender was the answer. She began identifying as “transgender.”Though she never began hormone treatment, she shaved her head and wore a breast binder. She lived openly as a “boy” for several years.

Charlie eventually “detransitioned” publicly — and was shocked by how many people reached out to share their own similar stories. In response, she formed the Detransition Advocacy Network to provide support.

“A lot of us are autistic and tend to be under the age of about 25,” Charlie shared. Many individuals she met were in similar situations. “A lot of these young women feel that they were not in a state to be able to give consent. They were so unwell with eating disorders or depression. [They thought] that was going to be the thing that made them feel better.”

But it didn’t.

Christian counseling SAVES LIVES. Help us overturn the bans with your gift today, and a special Challenge Grant will DOUBLE your impact.

Christian counseling could have stopped the pain

Debbie, Charlie, and hundreds like them never received intensive therapy to understand the deeper causes of their identity confusion. They were rushed toward transition.

But what they needed was the truth. Clarity. A path toward healing.

They needed Christian change counseling — the very therapy that is now banned in at least 87 cities and states across America.

These bans make it illegal for pastors, counselors, or ministries to walk with someone who wants help aligning their identity with God’s design. These bans make it illegal to offer hope. Illegal to speak the truth.

A Supreme Court case that could end the bans

This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Chiles v. Salazar — a case that could overturn Christian counseling bans nationwide and protect the freedom to tell the truth in love.

Liberty Counsel has already filed one brief in this case and is preparing another. But we need your help now more than ever.

We can’t do this without YOU!

This is the line in the sand

Debbie’s body was mutilated. Charlie says hundreds of girls were too broken to give real consent.

And the only form of help that could have spared them — Christian change counseling — is being banned nationwide.

This isn’t compassionate. It’s criminal.

The LGBTQ lobby is silencing truth, outlawing healing, and destroying lives.

Liberty Counsel is fighting back. But we are up against powerful, well-funded forces — and we cannot win without you.

Now is the time to take a stand. Help us set the captives free!

TAKE ACTION

The threat to Christian counseling is just the beginning. The so-called “Equality Act” would enshrine LGBTQ ideology into federal law. Christian schools, ministries, counselors, and even churches could be forced to comply with radical gender ideology. Fax Congress and sign our petition today!
