“City of Angels” Bans Worship Service Again! 

The city is up to its old tricks just five years after Liberty Counsel forced it to stop banning public worship services.  

For a metropolitan area known as the “City of Angels,” Los Angeles public officials are not behaving like angels. Mayor Karen Bass has no problem permitting antifa protests and “gay pride” events on Hollywood Boulevard, but she banned Harvest Rock Church and Mayday USA from holding public worship services.

The City of Los Angeles may not pick and choose which groups are allowed First Amendment rights of free expression or religious freedom. These ministries cannot be silenced for peaceful public expression of Christian viewpoints.

Five years ago, Los Angeles tried to revoke religious liberty and public expressions of faith by banning worship services indoors or outdoors to appease disgraced Dr. Anthony Fauci and Joe Biden. That was a big mistake.

This time, Los Angeles is canceling worship services to appease the LGBTQ mob. Regardless of the reason, LA’s actions are STILL unconstitutional. This is another big mistake.

City officials told our clients that they could not hold their public worship service because there would be no room on Hollywood Boulevard for fire trucks and emergency vehicles.

But the very next week, the city DID allow the LGBTQ “Pride Parade” to throw a massive demonstration with far more attendees on the exact same Hollywood Boulevard where Harvest and Mayday had been denied. 

Furthermore, Mayor Karen Bass not only allowed violent antifa anti-ICE protests on the same street, but she also encouraged everyone to join in the melee!

Mayday USA is inspired by a grassroots movement in Peru called “#DontMessWithOurKids.” Peruvian parents took to the streets, not in violence, but in prayer and worship, and took a stand against gender ideology and abortion. The movement helped change the government’s leadership, and as a result, gender confusion is now officially classified as a mental illness in Peru, and life is defined as beginning at conception.

Harvest Rock Ministries and a group of other churches planned Mayday revival events in five major U.S. cities — New York, Miami, Houston, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The five-city tour was a “Mayday” call for a nationwide Christian revival to awaken America’s parents and politicians to the gospel, and the need to protect children, families, and religious freedom.

Ironically, defendant Mayor Bass, in an official statement, encouraged protests regarding ICE activity and permitted those events — even when they turned violent. Yet, Mayday organizers wished to peacefully exercise their constitutional rights to speech, expression, and religion on Hollywood Boulevard, home to frequent and recurring parades and other constitutionally protected expressive activity.

The City informed Mayday organizers that their permit application was denied because the City could not permit anything related to “freedom of speech” or “protests” — a ridiculous statement considering L.A. permitted “pride” events and violent antifa protests.

In our 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court win in Shurtleff v. City of Boston, the High Court ruled that government entities may not discriminate against religious viewpoints.

By denying Mayday’s permit because of its “religious viewpoint” while allowing LA Pride to speak on Hollywood Boulevard about similar topics from a different viewpoint, the Los Angeles permitting scheme favored nonreligious value systems more favorably than religious ones — a clearly discriminatory and unconstitutional censoring of religious expression.

I'm not sure how Mayor Bass and her anti-Christian compatriots thought they could get away from this latest attempt to rob Californians of their religious freedom rights. Liberty Counsel has won on this very issue many times. 

We won during COVID, and we intend to win now. Because if we do not challenge this latest act of tyranny against the church, the bullies will grow bolder, and more attacks will come against our religious liberty.
