Los Angeles & Seattle SUED for Discriminating Against Christians 

Liberty Counsel filed suit against both cities last week.  

Two “woke” cities thought they could crush religious freedom rights at the behest of LGBTQ activists. Liberty Counsel is taking them to court.

The City of Seattle kicked Christians out of their own permitted public worship event. 

The City of Los Angeles refused to permit the same ministry’s permit while allowing “LA Pride” to use the same venue a few days later. 

Both cities took these actions to appease LGBTQ activists and city officials — and that’s against the law.

Liberty Counsel’s 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court win in Shurtleff v. City of Boston established that government actors may not engage in viewpoint discrimination. In this case, cities may not censor, silence, or discriminate against Christian viewpoints while openly promoting the LGBTQ viewpoint on the same subject. But that is exactly what the cities of Seattle and Los Angeles did to our clients just three months ago.  

In May of this year, a group of ministries planned to worship in the streets of five major American cities — New York, Miami, Houston, Seattle, and Los Angeles — as a “mayday” call to awaken parents and politicians into protecting children and our religious freedom. 

The worship services went off without a hitch in the first three cities, until they reached the “Left Coast.” On May 24, the City of Seattle purposefully created a situation that allowed antifa to violently attack the worshipping Christians before kicking them out of their own permitted event.   

Seattle refused to allow the Mayday event to occur in the public park near a Christian neighborhood. Instead, the city required the Mayday event to meet in another park — one located in a predominantly LGBTQ area. 

When the worshippers arrived for their event, they were met by urine-filled balloon-pelting drag queens and antifa rioters. Senior citizens and children were physically assaulted. A 17-year-old boy who had come to pray was held at knifepoint.  

Seattle police arrived and kicked the Christians out of their own event. Despite clear video footage showing the LGBTQ and antifa rioters were the violent perpetrators, Seattle’s Democrat mayor, Bruce Harrell, blamed the Christians, labeling them “far right extremists.” 

Don’t let LGBTQ cities ERASE Christian rights!

Los Angeles then unlawfully refused to permit the Mayday event. When Mayday organizers sought a permit to hold their event on Hollywood Boulevard, where thousands of public gatherings have been permitted and staged in the past, the City of LA denied the request.  

Los Angeles officials claimed that this Christian event would prevent firetrucks and emergency equipment from accessing the road, DESPITE the fact that the city issued a permit for the “LA Pride” gathering a few days later, which was held on the exact same road and area, but with tens of thousands MORE attendees. 

Both Seattle and Los Angeles are “woke” cities that actively endorse LGBTQ lifestyles.  

The law is clear. Governments MAY NOT pick and choose which groups are allowed First Amendment rights of free expression or religious freedom. But that is exactly what both Seattle and Los Angeles have done.  

Liberty Counsel has fought and won scores of cases of this nature, and we will not stop until every attempt to rob Christians of their freedom is eradicated.

LGBTQ cult members are pushing Congress to pass the misnamed “Equality Act” of 2025. This act strips Christians of their religious freedom rights while establishing the LGBTQ as a preferred viewpoint of the U.S. government.

If passed, ANY discussion of God’s design for marriage, sexuality, and the human body will be labeled as “LGBTQ discrimination” and will lead to serious penalties. We cannot allow “woke” members of Congress to appease the LGBTQ by robbing Christians of their right to religious freedom, speech, and viewpoints.
