Washington state's attorney general is asking the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to strip away protections that have allowed ministries to hire employees who share their faith and live according to their biblical convictions.

Liberty Counsel has stepped into this battle by filing a brief defending one of our nation's oldest and most important constitutional freedoms.

If the government can dictate who a Christian ministry must employ, then no ministry is truly free to carry out its God-given mission.

The consequences reach far beyond one Christian homeless ministry in Washington state.

The outcome could influence other courts across the country — including Liberty Counsel's nationally watched case defending Liberty University after it terminated an employee who intentionally violated the university's biblical standards regarding human sexuality.

Our brief cites more than a century of Supreme Court and federal court precedent establishing that religious organizations — not judges or politicians — have the constitutional right to determine who advances their religious mission. Whether someone serves as a pastor, teacher, IT specialist, custodian, or administrative assistant, every employee contributes to carrying out that mission.

If government officials can force Christian ministries to abandon their sincerely held beliefs whenever an employee demands it, then religious freedom becomes little more than words on paper.
