God writes the script — We must be obedient

The level of spiritual warfare our nation is currently facing is like nothing I have ever seen before. I’ll tell you more, but first:

If it were up to us, we would script events differently, but God knows best. We must never give up and never get discouraged. We must have faith that His will be done here on earth, as it is in heaven. And we must keep fighting.

Liberty Counsel is involved in several significant lawsuits, including a ballot initiative, and is preparing to file several more lawsuits with the U.S. Supreme Court.

When Anita and I founded Liberty Counsel 37 years ago, we did so with two distinct goals in mind: 

  1. Overturn Roe v. Wade to stop the wholesale murder of innocents. 
  2. Eliminate the Lemon Test, which had been used to bludgeon Christian religious freedom rights into near oblivion.

We accomplished both of those monumental feats in 2022, but not until after 33 years of hard work. We had temporary setbacks, but we did not give up. And we never stopped believing.

Take the case of Shurtleff v. City of Boston. If I had my way, Boston would have caved after receiving our demand letter. The city censored the Christian flag in a public forum — not because of the symbol of the cross on the flag, but because the application referred to it as a “Christian Flag.”

If Hal Shurleff perceived the flag was a “Christian Flag,” he could not raise it. But if he removed “Christian” from the application and substituted a secular modifier (like “Camp Constitution Flag”), he could raise it.

But God had other plans, and I’m sure glad He did. We lost twice at the District Court and twice in 3-0 rulings at the Court of Appeals. But then our historic 9-0 win at the U.S. Supreme Court led to the overruling of the 1971 case of Lemon v. Kurtzman.

During those 33 years from 1989 to 2022, we never gave up. Discouragement was not an option. We kept on believing, and now it’s a whole new day for the First Amendment and religious freedom.

We must muster the same courage now. We cannot be discouraged or give up because too much is at stake.

Multiple lawsuits pending

Liberty Counsel is suing to overturn an unlawful abortion ballot initiative in Virginia designed to implement the wholesale murder of unborn children.

We are filing this month in Bickford v. Bradeen at the Supreme Court to restore the right of a mother to take her teenage daughter to church and read the Bible, despite a state court ruling banning her from having anything to do with Christianity.

We’ve filed a brief in the SCOTUS case St. Mary's v. Roy where Denver, Colorado, is unlawfully discriminating against religious preschools.

We are also filing a brief in Missionaries of Saint John the Baptist, Inc. v. Frederic, where a Kentucky township is unlawfully forbidding a church from using its own property to glorify the Lord.

And I also expect that our case defending Liberty University against the ACLU may well land at the Supreme Court.

Spiritual warfare

On Saturday, Liberty Counsel joined the Nehemiah Alliance for a 15-hour prayer gathering at the U.S. Capitol. God haters disparaged the gathering, claiming that nothing could be “scarier” than a bunch of Christians praying for America.

When a gathering to pray for a nation becomes a target for hate, it demonstrates the shocking depth of the spiritual warfare.

As James 5:16 tells us, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
