Across America People Are Answering the Rally Call of the First National Day of Purity

Jan 14, 2004

ORLANDO, FL – In just five days, hundreds of individuals, organizations and churches across America have responded to the rally call of the Day of Purity. The latest endorsement comes from Dr. Jerry Falwell. The strong show of support comes as no surprise in response to a culture that tells our youth that sexual experimentation and exploration in the elementary years is healthy and normal. One freshman health text tells students that “Testing your ability to function sexually and give pleasure to another person may be less threatening in your early teens with people of your own sex….You may come to the conclusion that growing up means rejecting the values of your parents.” In fact, GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) explained their goal, “If we do our jobs right, we’re going to raise a generation of kids who don’t believe the claims of the religious right.” The reason? “Whoever captures the kids owns the future.” A look at today’s schools, television programs and internet would lead us to believe they are succeeding. In fact, the latest trend among teenage girls is known as “bisexual chic.” They are experimenting with lesbianism because it’s “cool.” Some girls even kiss each other while a paying audience of young boys goads them on.

While some may think that experimenting with sexuality is healthy and normal, what they fail to consider are the devastating consequences of their actions. Each day in America 8,000 teens will be infected with a sexually transmitted disease. Over 1 million teenage girls will become pregnant this year, which leads to 20% of the 1.3 to 1.5 million abortions performed in this country each year.

Rena Lindevaldsen, National Coordinator for the Day of Purity stated, “We live in a culture hostile to traditional values, which has produced shocking statistics on the state of our youth. The question we are asking is what are you going to do about it? To what lengths will you go to turn the culture back toward traditional values? As youth, parents, lawmakers and parents, what role will you play? What will your legacy be on the state of sexual morals in this country?” The Day of Purity is a day on which students, parents, leaders and pastors can make a public demonstration of their commitment to remain sexually pure, in mind and actions.

Mathew Staver, President of Liberty Counsel, which is sponsoring the Day of Purity project, commented, “Although the statistics are shocking, we can make a difference. Lives can be changed. Our youth are yearning for an opportunity to stand up for what they know is right. Some students may have made mistakes that they regret by engaging in pre-marital sexual activities. It is never too late to make a fresh start. We, as parents, leaders and pastors need to stand alongside them. We need to be in the battle to restore our culture. The Day of Purity is the place to start. On February 13, 2004, we have an opportunity to make our voices heard.”
