Changing the Culture -- One Event At A Time

Oct 2, 2006

Super Conference 2006

This morning, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee spoke to pastors, church leaders and students at the annual Super Conference, which is being held this week at Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church. During the Sunday morning church service, Governor Huckabee delivered an unforgettable message entitled "The Meaning of Marriage." Everyone should hear this message, which is archived on the Church's web site. In November 2005, Time magazine named him one of the five best governors in the nation. Governor Huckabee is frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008. In addition to spending time with him over the weekend, Mat had the privilege of giving him a tour of the outstanding facilities at Liberty University School of Law. From everything we have heard so far, Governor Huckabee could make an excellent president.

Pastors, Churches and Politics

Later this week, Mat is scheduled to address hundreds of pastors at a conference on political activity. The event will be held at Strang Communications (the publisher of Charisma, New Man, and other magazines) in Lake Mary, Florida. Mat will encourage pastors to get involved in the political process and instruct them on how to legally engage the culture. Contact Liberty Counsel at 800-671-1776 for more information.

Liberty Counsel Law Clerk Wins Moot Court Competition

We wish to congratulate Jeff Johnson, a third year student at Liberty University School of Law, who recently won awards for best brief and best oral argument. Jeff excelled in a challenging competition judged by notable jurists, including Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Alice M. Batchelder. After the competition, Judge Batchelder remarked that Liberty's two finalists were superior to the top competitors from one of the top-rated law schools in the nation (which we won't name). She was on the short list of judges under consideration for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. Others judging the contest were: The Honorable Eric G. Bruggink of the United States Court of Federal Claims, The Honorable James C. Turk of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, The Honorable D. Arthur Kelsey and The Honorable William G. Petty of the Virginia Court of Appeals.

Leading Children to Christ

Mat Staver recently spoke at two Child Evangelism Fellowship events in South Carolina. We believe that CEF is the most effective children's ministry in the world. The events were held at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia and at the University of South Carolina in Lancaster. Liberty University has teamed up with CEF to offer a Bachelor of Science degree, which includes 18 hours of credits at the CEF headquarters in Warrenton, Missouri. The University also offers a Master of Arts degree in children's ministries, which includes CEF training.

California School Children Escape Sexual Indoctrination

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently vetoed two bills (AB 606 and AB 1056) that would have forced school children to accept and promote homosexuality, bisexuality and transexuality. Our friend Randy Thomasson of Campaign for Children and Families was instrumental in marshalling thousands of concerned citizens to help kill both bills. The Governor deserves a hearty "THANK YOU" from all of us.
