Liberty Counsel applauds the U.S. House of Representatives’ choice of legal counsel to defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The U.S. House leadership hired Paul Clement of King & Spalding, LLP to defend DOMA. Clement is the former Solicitor General under President George W. Bush. He is a skilled advocate who has argued many times before the United States Supreme Court.

President Obama instructed Attorney General Eric Holder to no longer defend DOMA, which affirms the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman for purposes of federal law. Even before the Department of Justice ceased defending DOMA, it was providing only a weak defense. Now that Paul Clement is on the case, DOMA will get the defense it deserves.

Paul Clement has worked side by side with Liberty Counsel’s Founder and Chairman Mathew Staver on previous Ten Commandments cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.  Liberty Counsel had already filed amicus briefs in some of the challenges to DOMA and will continue to provide briefs on all challenges to DOMA.
