FDA's Approval of Over-the-Counter Pill Endangers Women

Aug 25, 2006

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the over-the-counter sale of the so-called “morning-after” pill (commonly called “Plan B”) to women 18 years and older, and to younger women with doctor’s approval. The FDA released the restrictions on the chemical abortion drug on the eve of a Senate committee meeting to discuss confirming Andrew Van Eschenbach, the FDA’s acting commissioner, as the permanent agency head.

The FDA has done women a tremendous disservice by luring them into a false sense of security about the risks of promiscuity. Women deserve the truth about Plan B and its side effects.

Studies show rising STD rates in countries where Plan B is available without a prescription. The manufacturer, Barr Pharmaceuticals, admits the drug’s common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, tiredness, headache, menstrual changes, dizziness, breast tenderness, and vomiting. Both the manufacturer and the World Health Organization warn against routine use of the drug. Repeated use of this drug will expose women to a significantly increased risk of a potentially life-threatening ectopic pregnancy.

The media and the manufacturer are misleading the public by claiming that Plan B prevents pregnancy, but that claim is untrue. Plan B prevents implantation of a live human embryo that is up to 72-hours old. Life begins at conception. Preventing implantation causes the embryo to starve to death. When women realize they may have taken the life of their own unborn, there is an additional risk of depression and post-abortion syndrome. Women don’t need “Plan B”, they need the “Plan A” of abstinence.

In 2004, Liberty Counsel founded the “Day of Purity,” an international educational program designed to promote abstinence and empower young women and men to make responsible life choices. Although the actual “Day of Purity” is observed on Valentine’s Day, our educational efforts continue throughout the year. For more information, visit www.DayOfPurity.org.
