Liberty Counsel's Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign Gains Ground

Dec 11, 2007

In the past few weeks, Liberty Counsel has handled scores of cases in defense of Christmas as part of its Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign.

Last week we informed you that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources ordered all of the state parks to remove Nativity scenes, citing one complaint.

Liberty Counsel sent a letter and legal memorandum to ODNR explaining that the law does not require censorship of religious items from Christmas displays. We also sent a Liberty Alert asking you to contact state officials.

We are pleased to report that many of you responded. The next day, ODNR stated in an email that the Governor's office had "reviewed the matter and asked that the Division continue prior holiday traditions. Although some have questioned the propriety of including nativity scenes in such displays, the Governor believes that they are an established and appropriate part of our holiday tradition."

You can contact Governor Ted Strickland and thank him for asking that the nativity scenes be returned to the state parks. There is a form on the Governor's web site, call his office at 614-466-3555, or write to: Governor's Office, Riffe Center, 30th Floor, 77 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43215-6108.

Although many situations have been resolved, many remain in process, some of which are described in our News Release, which is posted on our web site at www.LC.org.

U.S. House to Consider Christmas Resolution

Our Washington, D.C. office informed us this morning that the House will consider a Resolusion recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.  H.Res. 847, introduced by Rep. King of Iowa, is on the House calendar for today and will need a 2/3 (290 votes) majority to pass.

Contact your representative to express your support for the Christmas Resolution (HR 847).

The Resolution states in part:

Whereas Christmas, a holiday of great significance to Americans and many other cultures and nationalities, is celebrated annually by Christians throughout the United States and the world... Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ...Whereas many Christians and non-Christians throughout the United States and the rest of the world, celebrate Christmas as a time to serve others: Now, therefore be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world; (2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide; (3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith; (4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization; (5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and (6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.

New England Primer

New England Primer A great Christmas gift for your children or grandchildren is the New England Primer. This little book is a good example of early American education. Introduced in the Boston public schools in 1690, for the next two centuries the New England Primer was a required textbook from which every first grader learned grammar and spelling. The New England Primer taught first graders the alphabet using religious references. For the letter "A", the students learned, "In Adam's Fall, We sinned all." For the letter "C", the students recited: "Christ crucified, For sinners died."
