Washington, DC—Mat Staver, Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman, will be honored at the First Ex-Gay Awareness Dinner on September 30, 2013, for his work defending change therapy in California and New Jersey.
Hosted by Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX), a national, nonprofit organization that advocates for former homosexuals and their families, the event will also feature Dennis Jernigan, who will share his music and story of coming out of homosexuality.
“I am honored to receive this award,” said Mat Staver. “It is my privilege to represent minors who struggle with same-sex sexual attractions and who seek counseling against those who want to intrude into their counseling room and tell them and their counselor what may be said,” said Staver.
“A 2009 American Psychological Association’s Task Force Report admits sexual orientation, behavior, and identity are fluid, and thus capable of change. Yet, the California and New Jersey legislatures passed laws banning change therapy under any circumstances. These laws will harm children,” Staver noted.
“The minors we represent have not and do not want to act on same-sex attractions, nor do they want to engage in such behavior. They are greatly benefiting from counseling,” Staver said. “The laws banning change therapy are politically motivated to interfere with counselors and clients. It is an unprecedented overreach to regulate what a counselor may say and what a client may hear. It crosses the line and violates the Constitution. Interfering with the right to self-determination and prohibiting clients the right to prioritize religious values are serious violations of freedom and affect the rights of all clients and counselors. Liberty Counsel will continue to defend the rights of minors and their counselors,” Staver concluded.
