Modern-Day Abolitionist Sits on the Alabama Supreme Court

Justice Tom Parker, Alabama Supreme Court, is a modern-day Wilberforce, fighting for the rights of the unborn and families.

In the nine years Justice Parker has sat on the Alabama Supreme Court, he has waged a relentless war to defend the unborn, using the very Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, Roe v. Wade. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, in writing the majority opinion, made clear, “If this suggestion of personhood is established, [Roe’s] case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life would then be guaranteed by the [14th] Amendment. The appellant conceded as much on reargument.”

Justice Tom Parker points out that the courts give personhood to the unborn in laws that govern property, healthcare, and guardianship, as well as criminal and tort law. “It is impossible for an unborn child to be a separate and distinct person at a particular point in time in one respect and not to be a separate and distinct person at the same point in time in another respect,” Parker wrote in a majority decision which held that the word “child” in Alabama’s chemical endangerment statute applies to the born and unborn.
