President Bush Vetos Stem Cell Research Bill

Dec 4, 2006

Today was a historic day in the presidency of George W. Bush. Not only did he exercise his first veto, but he did it on one of the most important moral and ethical issues a President can face. President Bush has always maintained the proper balance between science and morality, choosing to advance scientific research while honoring the sanctity and dignity of all human life. As the President announced his veto of a bill (H.B. 810) that would have funded the intentional creation and destruction of human embryos, he did so against the backdrop of parents cradling their precious young babies. Each one of the infants had been adopted as a frozen embryo. They were the product of leftover human embryos following in vitro fertilization. Under the bill the President vetoed, each one of these babies, instead of being held by their adoptive moms and dads, would have been destroyed in a laboratory and would have become the subject of experimentation. As President Bush forcefully said, “These babies are not spare body parts,” flanking the President on his left were others who had been the recipients of adult stem cell research treatment, which had been derived from adult stem cells such as blood from umbilical cords. The lives of these people, who have benefited from adult stem cell research, further underscore that we never need to sacrifice human life in order to advance science.

Today was truly a historic day. One man stood between life and death. I was proud and honored to observe President Bush's commitment to the sanctity of all human life. Had he not stood in the gap at the right time, America would have gone down a road from which it would be difficult to return. As the President noted, the Declaration of Independence says that we are endowed by our Creator with the unalienable right to life. That right is extended to the tiniest and most vulnerable human being.
