Washington, DC – Liberty Counsel is overturning years of misinformation and intimidation, and pastors are responding!

For years, leftist groups, such as Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AU), have used deception and fear tactics to censor the church and muzzle pastors. A recent letter to religious leaders by Barry Lynn, Executive Director of AU, inaccurately said, “If the IRS determines that your house of worship has engaged in unlawful intervention, it can revoke the institution’s tax-exempt status.” 

No church has ever lost its tax-exempt status for opposing or supporting a candidate for political office. Churches and pastors may speak on Biblical and moral issues.  They can educate about the candidates’ viewpoints. They can encourage people to vote and can assist them in getting to the polls. Even the Church at Pierce Creek in Binghamton, New York, which was sued by the IRS after it took out full-page ads in the USA Today and The Washington Times opposing Bill Clinton for President, did not lose its tax-exempt status. 

“The truth is, a church has never lost its tax-exempt status for either endorsing or opposing any political candidate or endorsing or opposing a local, state, or federal law,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. “Who are you going to listen to, AU who has never won a case against a church for political activity, or LC who has never lost a case regarding political activity?” Staver asked. “I encourage pastors to remove the muzzle that secularists want to put on them and exchange it for a megaphone to speak Biblical truths regarding social and moral issues.”
